Waiheke Island is a 35-minute exhilarating catamaran trip from
downtown Auckland CBD to think blue seas, flotillas of
yachts competing or at play, deserted natural volcanic rocks and
islets that you weave through to reach the ninety-six kilometres
of coastline that is Waiheke.
They say its the best commute in the world.
And when you step off the passenger ferry at Matiatia Wharf you
find yourself in a very different place away from the bustle
of city life on an island of creativity, of wine, olives, lavender,
sandy stretches of beach, and above all tranquillity.

Called simultaneously the Nantucket of the southern
hemisphere, New Zealands own Provence and an Ibiza of the
60s (without the nightclubs!) this is an artists island,
a haven for creative people encompassing all the arts. Time stops
still as you lounge on the deck, watching the local fishermen
leaving first thing in the morning to catch red snapper for your
lunch, or star gazing long into the night.
The microclimate allows Waiheke to lend itself perfectly to the
production of some of the greatest wines in New Zealand
amongst them Stony Ridge, Goldwater, Peninsula Estate and, our
favourite, Passage Rock and tours of vineyards, olive groves
and the like abound.
Group or individual tours can be booked or take
your time and do it yourself cars, scooters and bikes are
plentiful to rent. So are horses and kayaks. Your decision.
